We visited Great Sand Dunes National Park on a recent summer trip to visit family. Our goal was a low key day in nature and we nailed it.

If you hit it when Medano Creek is flowing, it adds an extra layer of fun. It’s shallow, calm, and the perfect play area.

I packed a few sleds, water/sand toys, and some water. It was a beautifully overcast day but don’t let Colorado fool you…wear sunscreen!
We also tried sand sledding. It’s not quite as easy as it looks, but it’s fun once you figure it out (or just accept the wipeouts). Renting a board nearby is the way to go—regular sleds don’t really work.

A few things that made a difference for us:
Go early morning or evening because the sand gets hot. Bring more water than you’d think because the high elevation can really get to you. Expect sand everywhere!

Don’t forget to stop at the Visitor Center so your kids can earn their Junior Ranger Badges (and you can buy some stickers).
